Have You Heard... Daughter

Welcome to a new series on my blog. I am a big fan of music. Which music ? I hate that question. It’s probably one of the hardest ‘about me’ questions I've ever faced. My range of musical loves goes from ABBA (my guilty pleasure) to a bit of Enter Shikari (they grew on me thanks for my housemates) and everything in between. I am by no means at expert in the field of musique so if you have any recommendations or knowledge you wish to share then please get in touch and you can become part of this series.

For my first ever Have You Heard I would like to talk about a band I fairly recently came across. I heard Daughter’s song Youth on Radio 1 and from that decided to ‘spotify stalk’ them. While experimenting with hairstyles, I basically listened to their whole repertoire (Multi-Tasking Pro!). The calming tunes are hauntingly beautiful and the lyrics are seriously poetic. I have a lot of time for music that makes you feel something.

Still with feet touching
Still with eyes meeting
Still our hands match
Still with hearts beating
(Still, Daughter)

Daughter's Factfile
Info – Daughter is made up of three members – Elena the singer, Igor the guitarist and Remi the drummer. This Indie Folk band got together in London in 2010 and their first album was released in March this year.
If you like: Fleet Foxes, The XX and Bombay Bicycle Club then you'll probably enjoy Daughter
Listen to: Their whole album is brilliant but Still, Youth & Human are my favourites. One of their first songs, Landfill has really sad lyrics but paints such a musical picture.

Let me know what you think? Have You Heard Daughter before? Any suggestions for future music posts?

Primark Haul

Today Mum and I went on a quick trip to Chelmsford and popped into Primark to grab a few bits. This weekend I am off to Windsor to see my Uni housemates. I haven't seen any of them since May so it's going to be a great weekend - lots of alcohol, dancing, chilling and chatting. With this in mind I have recently bought a few going-out outfits and to go with said outfits I needed new accessories!

Tan pumps with a sparkly bow - On most nights out at uni it makes sense to wear flat shoes - Less chance of falling over, more chance of staying out and dancing for longer and look how pretty these pumps are!! I already have a ton of black shoes so thought I'd mix it up a bit. Primark have a great variety of pumps at the moment and at £10 these should last me a while.

2 vest tops - My friend, Hayley showed me these tops in Stratford after I found similar ones in Topshop for £18 each. I'm so pleased to have these at £5 each to go with my new shorts and jacket co-ords (photos to come after the weekend) and many other outfits. The tops are very thin so perfect for this weather and the colours make me look even more tanned (#winning).

Tan purse/clutch bag - To go with my new shoes, I needed a new going-out bag. I only need to fit my phone, house keys, money, I.D. and lip stuff into a bag. This is actually a purse but fits neatly under my arm or in my hand when I'm out dancing. It was on sale (I know a sale in Primark?!) for only £2 so I had to buy it!

Have you found any gems while out shopping recently? There was so much more I could have bought but I'm trying to save money for Uni and with my 21st at the beginning of October, I'll hopefully get a few goodies then.

Liebster Award

Last week Georgina from secret dream world of a beautyholic nominated me for the Liebster Award. This award is a great way for bloggers to get to know new bloggers and those who have under 200 subscribed readers. So here are the rules:

Each nominee should answer the 11 questions by the tagger.
Choose 11 bloggers to pass the award to and link them in your post.
Create 11 new questions for the chosen bloggers.
Go to their page and tell them about their nomination.
No tag backs!

1) What is your favourite TV Show?
There are a few that I watch religiously but right now my favourite is Pretty Little Liars. If you haven't watched it you have to start from the beginning - It's like a murder mystery with 4 fashionable girls in the centre of it.
2) Best beauty item under £5?
I recently bought MUA's Primer from Superdrug (£4) which works a treat. It's been very useful, especially in the heatwave.
3) What is your perfect Saturday night out?
It would start with the girls are I all getting ready together. Then we'd go out for a few cocktails and move on to a club later. My favourite part is always the getting ready and cocktails because when we're together there is never an end to what we talk about and we have such a giggle.
4) What is your favourite meal?
Ooh this one is hard. I love food from the healthiest stuff to the indulgent parts. My favourite meal would involve bacon with some pesto pasta and some baguette chopped up on the side. My boyfriend's mum makes this amazing pasta and also has boiled egg in it. I'm hungry now...
5) Top 3 items you can't leave the house without?
My iPhone, my Purse and Vaseline for those horrid moments my lips get all dry.
6) How would your friends describe you?
"A bit mad" would probably be one of the things they'd say. Hopefully some nice stuff like kind and caring but nothing too boring.
7)What the one beauty product you re buy every time without trying other brands?
Rimmel's Stay Matt powder
8) What is your biggest pet peeve?
People being impolite. I've done a blog post on this already!
9) What is your favourite perfume?
Dolce & Gabbana - The one but I haven't looked at many others recently so that might change soon.
10) What is your favourite clothing brand?
If in doubt I always resort to New Look. They have lovely clothes at seriously affordable prices.
11) What is your dream luxury item?
I would really like a Michael Kors tote bag.

The bloggers I nominate are:
Carro from carroblogshere
Elizabeth from nomelizabeth
polkadotsandraindrops
Leona from ohleona
Sophie from daydreamsandstyle
Jade from aninvisiblecrown
Tilly from lovetilly
Jess from gingerlypale
Anna from awaywiththefairies

Other bloggers I know have already done this award so couldn't find 11 people to nominate! Sorry if you've already done it.

And my Questions are:
1) What is your favourite season for fashion?
2) What 3 items of make up can't you live without?
3) Where would you go if you could only visit one country?
4) What one animal you would love to have as a pet?
5) What is the name of your favourite shop?
6) What is your favourite blog post that you have written?
7) Why did you start blogging?
8) What was your favourite cartoon when you were younger?
9) What colour do you have a lot of in your wardrobe?
10) How important is exercise to you?
11) What website are you on the most?

Please let me know when you've answered these questions - I can't wait to read the answers!

Fashionable Week - Day 5

Today is the last day of Fashionable Week. You might be wondering, doesn't a week have 7 days? Now that is a good point but in the Fashion world surely we can do what we want? Besides 5 is much more fashionable than 7. This weekend I plan on wearing comfy clothes while sorting out my confusing living arrangements. There is not enough room in my parents house to fit us all in and as I'm only there until September, I'm going to either be on a mattress in the study or possible a sofa somewhere!

Day 5

I only really got ready for the day just for this post. I've not been feeling very well but wanted to commit to the cause! This dress is my favourite summer dress. I never want to grow out of it but it seems like that day isn't far off so want to wear it lots more before hand. I have had the denim jacket for years and I think it's a must-have in every girl's wardrobe. They are timeless pieces that are worth investing in.

Dress: Punky Fish / Jacket: Denim Co.

I thought I'd keep my face out of this one purely because of how rough I look and don't want to subject you lovely readers to that. The necklace was a valentine's gift from my amazing boyfriend and it came with ear-rings that I wear everyday. Oh, and the phone case is of course Insectosaurus! He is a loveable creature from the film Monsters vs Aliens and my lover Tom got this made for me. I'm such a child at heart! I hope you appreciate the small amount of effort I put in for the last day of this season's Fashionable Week.

If you decide to do your own week dedicated to making an effort with your clothes then please let me know. Thanks for reading!

Fashionable Week - Day 4

It is the middle of day 4 of Fashionable Week and what a great day it is so far. I have been looking after my 8 year old brother James today. We started the day with a bit of a photo shoot for this post and Ralph decided to get involved!

Necklace: New Look (I think)

This morning we went bowling and to no surprise, I was pretty terrible. We drew the first game and James beat me by 6 points in the second (oh the shame...). I wore the shoes I got on sale yesterday in Stratford and being the prepared person I am, I did remember to take socks. So for this pre-bowling photo-shoot I wanted to show the shoes properly. I think I managed to do that so thank you James for helping me!!

Shirt: Primark / Jeggins: Primark / Shoes: New Look

Once mum is back from work, I am off to see my friend Monica and whoever else is around. Can't wait to show off my new shoes that I've already tried driving in (successfully, may I add). What are your plans today and are you into bright colours with summer?

Fashionable Week - Day 3

Good evening my lovely readers! It is coming the end of Day 3 of Fashionable Week and what a day it's been. I went to Stratford to meet up with some of my course friends and had a great shopping trip!

Bag: Accessorize / Prosecco / Heels: New Look (sale)
I am so exhausted now but it was definitely worth it. I love Westfields and 100% recommend it for you shopaholics out there. I also bought two tops from Primark that were light and flowing.

Day 3

Jacket: Miss Selfridge / Top: Berska / Jeggins: Zara

I went on a shopping trip with my wonderful Nan recently and she bought me this lovely lace jacket from Miss Selfridge and matching high waisted shorts. I am saving the whole outfit for a friend's birthday party at the beginning on August.

This hair style was introduced to me yesterday by Anna so a big thanks to her! This is my attempt at it. It was easy enough to do but I rushed it a bit so didn't turn out as well as it could of.

As you can see, I've had a great day! How has yours been?

Fashionable Week - Day 2

It's day 2 of Fashionable Week and after an almost sleepless night thanks to the weather, I have gone for a comfy yet stylish outfit. Other than running a few errand, I plan on lazing about, reading some blogs, catching up on tv, eating and maybe even sleeping!

Day 2

Top: Primark / Trousers: New Look / Necklace: New Look
I adore these patterned trousers. They fit perfectly and made the journey to and from holiday much more relaxing (Jeans on a plane doesn't work for me - maybe a sequel to Snakes on a Plane). I can't for the life of me remember where I got those shoes from but I can tell you I've hardily ever worn them in all the years I've had them.

Fashionable Week - Day 1

Welcome to the first post of my first ever Fashionable Week. I am hoping to make this a seasonal post in which the streets will be my catwalk! I often quite casually for my day to day activities (jeans and a cami are my essentials). However this will give me a chance to make an effort and hopefully boost my confidence. Unlike the Fashion Weeks we know, the rules are slightly different:

1. This event is about wearing clothes that are already in your wardrobe so no need to buy anything new
2. Everyday during Fashionable Week I will post a photo of that day's outfit
3. No matter how casual an event is - I will make an effort.

So starting today I will wear my favourite items as well as search for those items that have been left at the back of my wardrobe for months/years to experiment with. I think a lot of my clothes deserve to see a bit of daylight!

Day 1

Dress: Topshop / Bag: Accessorize / Sandals: New Look  / Sunglasses: Boohoo

Let me know if you want to get involved in Fashionable Week and I'll mention your blog tomorrow :)

Food for Thought

Another food post already? I guess you can tell what's been occupying my mind the past few days... I love food and I'm not one to shy away from trying new things. HOWEVER - The other day on Twitter Charlotte from Colours and Carousels mentioned this:

I shouldn't have been so confused by this concept. I've seen cheese and pineapple on cocktail sticks at buffets. I like pineapple on pizzas but I've never even thought of having them in a sandwich or toastie. This is now on my list of things to try.

I'll be honest with you lovely readers, I don't actually have a list *gasp*. So I thought I'd take this opportunity to start one. As the saying goes: no time like the present! So I asked the Twitter World, What weird food combinations would you recommend? Here are four of the replies I received:

I wanted to try some weird food combinations. Then I can mark them off my newly made list and continue exploring the foodosphere. The one that I knew I could easy create was recommended by Cassie Searle. There was golden syrup in the cupboard from the previous pancake post and there are also chips in the freezer so yesterday I decided to make this strange concoction!

I shouldn't have made these straight after lunch. I was already full to the brim which is probably why I didn't enjoy them as much as I could of. If you want a hot, sweet snack, then this is worth trying. The almost fritter like taste was impressive considering the lack of effort it took to make but taste was a bit too weird for me.

Please get in touch with your weird food combinations and follow me on Twitter for the chance to feature in another one of my random posts!

Making Banana {and Strawberry} Pancakes

It can’t just be me who loves listening to Jack Johnson. The relaxed summer vibes are flowing from spotify right now as I’m sunbathing in the garden and chaos of the past few days! What chaos? You might be asking and that’s a very good question. The parents have gone to my older brother’s graduation so Wednesday and Thursday, I was in charge of my 8 year old Brother (James) and Ralph and Alvin. Chaos might be a bit of an exaggeration. I got in a bit of a frenzy trying to control Ralph on our dog walk after taking James to school. He wouldn’t listen to me! I know he is only a puppy but I’m pretty sure I could have left him with anyone else with a dog and he’d never come back. James also doesn’t like seeing me as an authority figure. He made up late for school by taking 10 minutes to clean his teeth (most of them were spent not brushing his teeth)… SO FRUSTRATING. Other than that, things ran quite smoothly.

So, Where do the pancakes come into this? Being the Domestic Goddess/ best Sister in the world, I made James and I pancakes for breakfast yesterday. I got up super early and made the best breakfast ever (according to James). In our recently done kitchen we only have one massive frying pan and as I didn’t fancy massive pancakes, the medium sized ones I made were very weirdly shaped. Anyway, James was impressed and ate 4 of them with sugar and lemon. I, on the other hand, fancied some fruit so go on mine.

With summer being my inspiration, I cut up a banana and a few strawberries and drizzled Golden Syrup over them. It might not have been as healthy as it could have been but they were so delicious! Sadly this won’t be a regular occurrence but we will probably enjoy it more as a one off treat. What’s your ‘best ever’ breakfast?

Heatwave Hairstyles

Above are a few lyrics inspired by the sunny climates we have had the pleasure of having over the past few weeks. I might love this weather but my hair does not. I have very long hair, long knotty hair which is also pretty straight. Oh, and it's an array of colours due various of shades it has been dyed over the years. The last time I dyed by hair was October 2012 and my time in the sun means some parts are even lighter. It might take ages to brush but I do love my hair. It is not often I have all of my hair tied up - it's a bit like my security blanket. However this weather is too hot for a blanket of any kind.

Washed and naturally dry (Thanks sunshine!)
Yesterday morning I showered, brushed my hair and set up a space in the living room. While my hair was drying naturally, I brought my big mirror, hairbands, bobby pins and of course my tangle-teezer (the best brush ever invented for hair as knotty as mine) into my little salon space. Ralph was eager to get involved, so as I sat on a cushion on the floor he slumped himself next to me - not one to miss the excitement of a Tuesday morning.

Over the past few months bobby pins have become close friends of mine. I try not to get too upset when one goes missing as that is pretty inevitable. One of my favourite hairstyles involves using these pins to keep my hair off my face. It was great when I was in exams as some of my hair struggles to stay behind my ears. This post is about Heatwave Hairstyles so I didn't just want it off my face. I wanted my hair off my neck, back and shoulders. The simplest and most effective way of doing this is a top knot.

After playing around with my hair for a while, Ralph began to crave my attention. He obviously agreed that a top knot is perfect, especially for a dog walk. That ditsy dog sometimes makes a good point! With my hair up and ready for the day, we went out with Mum for a quick walk before it got even hotter.

So that was my Tuesday Morning! How have you been spending time in this weather? Please let me know of any heatwave hairstyles you've tried and tested!

Today I Love # 1

I'll be honest; I'm feeling rather down at the moment. I have already used a whole roll of toilet paper to deal with my running/blocked nose and my head feels like a bucket full of sand (summer/beach reference - first thing that came to mind). This negative mood actually gave me some inspiration. I thought I'd start a series of posts about whatever is making my day that bit better. Before I start, let me tell you that I am grateful for my loving family, boyfriend, friends, pets and other meaningful stuff but these posts will look at the little things in life that brighten up my day -a bit of positivity!

The Sunshine. I may be slightly under the weather (weird phrase..) but this weather is making me feel tons better. The sniffles are bearable as I can go rest outside or be slightly more productive than I would in the heights of winter.

Tom Odell. Not my favourite Tom in the world and sure his music might seen a bit gloomy for this time of year BUT this brit award-winner's album is one to listen to. I know and Hold Me are awesome.

The Apprentice. The highly anticipated final is this Wednesday and I cannot wait! I want Luisa to win purely because I like cake. Her business is something to do with wholesale retail of cake-making stuff. (Sorry but that's the best summary you'll get from me!)

Scrunchies. The 90's icon is back. I love scrunchies - I always have. I recently lost a leopard print one that I had for many a year. I wore it daily when I did my skin care routine and make up. I am off out to New Look to invest in a couple. My hair needs to be up in this weather so watch this space for a heatwave hairstyle post soon!

Patterned Shorts. Who likes short-shorts? I certainly do and Primark definitely do. Last week I was in Somerset with only one pair of shorts (silly me!). A trip to Primark sorted out this conundrum and I brought a couple of pairs for £4 each! What a bargain.

Apologies for the bad photo but I wanted to show them to you!

What do you love today? Is the sun putting a spring in your step? Are those shorts that started to feel a bit too tight fitting perfectly again? x

Excuse Me, Mr Pigeon!

Similar to many others, I have been brought up to say please and thank you. It has been programmed into my brain and is similar to an automated answer phone message, except with more feeling behind the words. I'm not just polite automatically, I want to be nice. I want to say good morning to elderly couple walking down their dog. I want to wish the shop keeper well as he gives me my ribena, pack of minstrels and the latest copy of Company magazine. These small exchanges of niceness can make the world a better place (maybe not in a big way but as Mr Tesco says ‘Every little helps!’).

My Question is: Is it possible to be too polite? I have often been a guest in someone’s home and decline the offer of a cool refreshing drink even though I was so thirsty -Why did I do that?? I guess I was trying not to be in the way or any bother. I am often on the brink of social awkwardness. I go on walks quite often, walks with a purpose or just to clear my head, and on said walks you may hear me say, “Oh, excuse me.” Of course that is a polite thing to do, but even I know that isn't necessary when being in the way of a pigeon. Maybe the pigeon was in my way but I am not one to barge my way through others. Dr Doolittle got away with speaking to animals didn't he?

Nothing is wrong with being polite. In fact after thinking long and hard about my awkward ways I think I should embrace them more. I will continue to thank the fly that leaves through the window without any help and I will keep saying please after every item I order at the McDonald’s drive thru. However I will never have time for cold callers telling me I have PPI to claim. I'm saving them time by saying they have the wrong number – that’s polite compared to what some people shout down the phone.

A pet hate of mine is people being impolite. There is no need for it and a "Thank you kind stranger", is simple enough or Sorry when accidentally bumping into someone. One more thing - Queues. I'm not a fan of queuing but I wouldn't cut in. Why do some people not know how to queue? Sorry to rant but it's so frustrating when the majority of people follow these social etiquettes yet few go about ruining the systems put in place to keep the things fair.

What are your views on politeness? Please share your pet hates, socially awkward moments and thoughts with me! Thank you for reading x

Oasis Park

So this is it. My last holiday post *sniff sniff* and I am going to show and tell you all about my favourite day of the holiday and possibly my favourite day ever (so far). Oasis Park in Fuerteventura had so much to show us. From apes to zebras, flamingos to meerkats, we look so many photos of all the lovely creatures. We got to hold a baby crocodile, feed the lemurs, pet the giraffes and watch a parrot own at basketball! I even got a kiss off a sea lion (they aren't like lions, more like seals who are really well trained).

Tom's favourite by far was the meerkats. They would make such wonderful pets, their inquisitive smiling faces melted our hearts! The lemurs were also adorable. Their gentle grip on our hands as we fed them banana and grapes was sooo cute. It was great to get up close to these wild animals - as far as zoos go, this one felt like the animals had plenty of room and food. I couldn't get over how big giraffes are - even the young ones were insanely tall. We were standing on a platform so they might not seem as gigantic.

I've always been a bit of an animal lover but this day out made me realise how fascinating I find all creatures great and small. So here are the last three photos of my holiday that I want to share with you. If you're ever thinking of going to Fuerteventura please feel free to contact me for advice or to share your experiences. x

Holiday Favourites

Here is a short post on the things that made my holiday a little extra special. Don’t worry – I won’t continue to boast about my holiday for much longer. After this I will do one more post which focuses on cute animals at Oasis Park then my holiday reminiscing will be over.

- Two items that kept my feet looking fabulous:
Since my feet were constantly exposed on holiday, I wanted them to feel confident. Models Own Nail Varnish lasted the majority of my two weeks away and needed just a little touch up for the last few days. The metallic colour meant it went with everything I wore and shimmered in the sunlight. These Ella Shoes are the comfiest and stylish flip flops I've ever had. My mum treated me to them on last Easter when we went for a day out to Leigh-on-sea and I've worn them whenever possible.

- My favourite outfits:

My favourite daytime look (when out and about) was a simple cami and soft butterfly patterned shorts that went with most colours. The photo was from the day at the zoo where I wanted to feel comfortable. I think the animals appreciated my safari style effort! For our evening meals we liked to make an effort with our appearance. After a day in the sun wearing the 'casualist' of casual clothes, it was nice to wash off the sun cream and dress up.

Another pair of shoes that went with many of my outfits were in this photos- this was my attempt to show you the full outfit. They are gladiator sandals from New Look and the blue band you can see in these photos is from the hotel to show we stayed there (added some colour don'tcha think?)

Send me a link to any posts you’ve made about summer style, essentials & general summery fun! I’m off out to go enjoy the sun while it lasts – Have a great day x

Review: Club Jandia Princess Hotel

This hotel was worthy of more than a blog post! Tom & I spent two weeks in this luxurious 4 star hotel and thanks to First Choice; this inclusive holiday was a total bargain.

Going in the middle of June was a perfect time. The sun was out and it was a comfortable temperature to sunbathe and to stay outside for the majority of the day. As schools were not yet out for summer it sometimes felt like we were one of few residents. Sun loungers were always available, the buffet never overcrowded and there were no queues at the bars!

We stayed in a great room. The soft pastel colours were complimented by a few bright accessories and overall the room was very cosy, clean and modern. Compared to lots of hotels we looked through, there wasn’t a dated floral pattern in sight! We had the TV on quite a bit in the evenings as they had good programs like How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory on and channels like MTV and Disney.

Please excuse the mess! We forgot to take photos every time it was cleaned.

It took us less than 5 minutes to walk down to the lush sandy beach which I loved to walk across and let the waves chase me. The sea was clear and inviting- we accepted the invite and spent some time jumping over the waves. We also went on day trips to a nearby town, a waterpark & a zoo with the help of the first choice rep at the hotel.

The Buffet was to die for! There was a different selection each day (sometimes themed) and we now miss the ridiculous amounts we consumed over the two weeks. There was always room for dessert – even at breakfast!

Our last breakfast

I could rave about this resort much longer but don’t fancy boring you too much. If you do want to know more please feel free to contact me and I will get back to you as quickly as possible. Please link up any resorts you’ve written about or holidays you’d recommend. x
